FAIRPORT, PAINESVILLE & EASTERN
DIESEL ERA TRAFFIC DATA
The information on
this page is meant to supplement the discussion of the FP&E's diesel era
operations (see here). When you look over the traffic data below,
it underscores just how busy the FP&E was—especially considering that most
of the switching was done on a relatively small part of the railroad (the area
around the Diamond's Painesville Works).
Most of this
data I compiled from the FP&E's Annual Reports to the Public Utilities
Commission of Ohio; the last two sections, which give detailed traffic data for
1964 and 1965, came from the background documents of ICC Finance Docket 23980. (For more information about all of these
documents, see my FP&E
Resources page.)
Cars Handled
The FP&E Annual
Reports give a tally of cars handled, broken down into four different
categories. Fortunately Randall Jackson
(whom I introduced on my FP&E
Operations page) sent me detailed descriptions of each of the categories so
that the charts that follow will make more sense. The four categories are:
Cars Handled Earning
Revenue – Loaded: All loaded cars interchanged to or from
NKP/N&W, NYC/PC, and B&O; all loaded FP&E hoppers going from the
Diamond's Stone Dock to the Diamond's lime kilns; all loaded FP&E hoppers
going from the Diamond's Coke Plant to the Diamond's lime kilns (via the West
Yard); and all cars that were partially loaded in one location and moved to
another location to complete the loading.
Cars Handled
Earning Revenue – Empty: Cars assigned to a specific
department in an industry and moved to another location at the direction of the
industry. (Scott's Note: I am guessing
that these are cases where the FP&E charged a customer for moving an empty
car because the customer "changed their mind" on where they wanted to
have the car spotted).
Cars Handled Not
Earning Revenue – Loaded: Cars loaded with FP&E company
materials such as ballast, ties, sand, etc.
Cars Handled
Not Earning Revenue – Empty: All empty cars inbound from
NKP/N&W, NYC/PC, and B&O that were to be subsequently loaded and
shipped outbound; all empty FP&E hoppers going from the Diamond's lime
kilns to the Diamond's Stone Dock; all empty FP&E hoppers going from the
Diamond's lime kilns to the Diamond's Coke Plant (via South Hill Track and East
Yard); and any empty cars outbound to NKP/N&W, NYC/PC, and B&O that
came in loaded but could not be reloaded for outbound shipments due to loading
restrictions (any cars from railroads other than NKP/N&W, NYC/PC, and
B&O could not be loaded unless the load went in the direction of the owning
railroad).

1964 Revenue Traffic
The data below
covers all "Cars Handled Earning Revenue" for 1964—both loaded and
empty. I am presenting the data in a
stepped format: each number on a "step" is composed of the numbers on
the next "step" down. For
example, the "Revenue Carloads" figure (67,073) is composed of the
"Interchanged" figure (36,763) plus the "Interstation and
Intrastation" figure (30,310); the "Interstation and
Intrastation" figure (30,310) is composed of the "Interstation"
figure (20,774) plus the "Intrastation" figure (9,536); and so on.

1965 Loaded Revenue Traffic
The data below
covers only "Cars Handled Earning Revenue – Loaded" for 1965; for
some unknown reason the empty revenue carloads for the year were not included
in the table that this data came from.
As above, I am presenting the data in a stepped format.
